WHY IS NETWORK TELEVISION DEAD OR DYING?

It has nothing to do with the rise of the internet. It has nothing to do with cable TV. It is all about a failure of imagination. American networks are all suffering from a serious case of creative constipation. Thank God that they are dying, they are boring America to death. They have not had an original idea in decades. The last truly funny TV show that I saw was Seinfeld, racist show though it was. And there lies part of the problem. Network Television seems to be seriously unaware of the fact that this society is not just made-up of attractive, funny young white people. Demographically they might be very important, but culturally they are as dull as watching drying paint. It took Cable to figure out that America wanted to see a show about a gangster with panic disorder (The Sopranos), or a show about Baltimore Drug Dealers and the sleazy cops who build a career by violating their rights (The Wire). No-where on Network Television would you see an important character who happens to be a dark skinned black man with a scar on his face who is a terrifying King of the stick up boys, who never curses, and who also happens to be gay. It seems that the incestuous west coast and East Coast entertainment enclaves have become so inbred that they don't realize that America no longer finds them funny or finds their dramatics shows interesting. The only black characters you see on television are white people who happen to be black, or black people who fulfill the stereotypes of who and what people of color really are. Network Television has done the creative equivalent of moving into an all white gated community, or even worse, they have stuck their heads in a hole, possibly their ass, and has chosen to ignore the vitality of black and Latino culture. They get around to realizing that hip-hop is happening as it begins to die, and then they only do it to persuade themselves that they invented it by pimping the likes of M&M. How many more tough bitten white cops/lawyers/Doctors/D.A.s/ with cute, ballsy girl friends who may or may not work with them, and angry ex wives do they think America can stomach? Do these ofays have no imagination at all? The Television industry suffers from a serious case of group think or creative constipation. They persuade themselves that the schlock they have been producing for decades is really great. The problem is that they only talk to each other. And what they tell each other is that America finds Urban white ethnic humor, or humor filtered through that prism of sensibility funny. Here it is: WE DO NOT!! Watching Charlie Sheen is like watching a really bad car accident and wondering when it will get cleaned up. True cutting age TV is not even on cable any more. It's on Youtube. You look there and you see the future of TV. It is quirky, crazy, diverse, baffling, overwhelming, and endlessly fresh and inventive. Should we mourn the death of Network TV. NO!! I just hope that they are sentenced to a few years of watching the crap they been foisting on America.
